Blue Line of Dubai Metro: What is Known?
Dubai has officially announced the modernization of its metro system. In addition to the existing Red and Green lines, a new Blue line has been introduced.
Commencement of Construction and Planned Scale
Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority has commenced work on the Blue Line metro project, estimated at 18 billion dirhams. It is expected that the Blue Line metro will serve up to 200,000 passengers daily, increasing to 320,000 by 2040.
Route and Stations
The Blue Line metro will cover 14 stations, including nine above ground and five underground, spanning over 30 km. It will connect with the Red Line at Centrepoint station and the Green Line at Al Khor station. Despite construction starting this year, discussions with Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority and police are ongoing to ensure the safety of residents.
Expectations and Prospects
According to the Director-General of the Roads and Transport Authority, the Blue Line metro project aims to offer rapid transit between destinations, with travel times ranging from 10 to 25 minutes. In November 2023, the Blue Line metro was presented to Dubai’s top leadership, including Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Interestingly, more than half of the Blue Line’s route will be underground.
Prospects for Public Transport in Dubai
Considering the vast number of users on Dubai’s Red and Green metro lines, the commencement of the Blue Line construction promises significant improvements to the public transport system. Currently, the Red lines serve the old city while the Green lines connect it to the airport, city center, Dubai Marina, and Expo 2020 in the southwest.
