Dubai Railbus Testing to be Completed in Two Years: A New Step Towards Sustainable Transport
Within the next two years, technical studies for the Dubai Railbus project will be completed, marking a significant addition to the existing transport infrastructure, including Dubai Metro and Dubai Tram.
According to Abdul Muhsen Ibrahim Kalbat, CEO of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), the construction cost of Railbus will be 20-30% lower than similar systems worldwide, making it one of the most cost-effective projects.
Key Features of the Railbus Project
Railbus consists of capsule-like vehicles 11.5 meters long and 2.65 meters wide, capable of carrying up to 40 passengers. They operate on solar power, with tracks fully covered by solar panels.
Main features of Railbus:
- Maximum speed – 100 km/h
- Eco-friendly design – made from recycled materials
- 3D-printed – optimized for urban landscapes
- Hybrid system – combines the maneuverability of buses with the reliability of rail transport
Infrastructure and Metro Integration
Dubai Railbus will be integrated with existing transport systems, providing a seamless travel experience for residents and tourists. According to Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed’s plan, new car-free pedestrian zones will be introduced, along with the expansion of metro and tram networks.
The Future of Dubai Metro
By 2040, the number of metro and tram stations will double. As part of an AED 18 billion ($4.9 billion) project, the new Blue Line will add 30 km of track and 14 stations.
Upcoming developments:
- Increase the number of metro stations from 55 to 96
- Expand the metro network to 140 km by 2030
- Create new car-free zones throughout the city
