Dubai is preparing to roll out a new driverless, trackless tram system that will connect directly to the Dubai Metro and significantly reduce road congestion across the city.
A senior official from the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) confirmed at GITEX Global 2025 that the full feasibility study will be completed by mid-2026, marking a major step in Dubai’s transition toward smart, sustainable mobility.
What is a trackless tram?
The system is an eco-friendly, electric, driverless mode of transport that follows a “virtual track” using advanced navigation technologies — including GPS, LiDAR, and optical sensors.
Unlike traditional trams, it does not require rails, which means:
✔ Lower construction and maintenance costs
✔ Reduced environmental impact
✔ Greater flexibility and scalability
Metro connection and smoother traffic flow
The new trams will integrate seamlessly with the Dubai Metro, supporting the emirate’s vision to make 25% of all transportation autonomous by 2030. They will run on dedicated lanes, similar to express bus routes, ensuring safe and efficient operation while improving traffic flow in key urban areas.
Capacity and performance
The trackless tram combines the capacity of a metro system with the convenience of a bus:
✔ Capacity: up to 300 passengers (three times a standard bus)
✔ Length: 32–42 meters; width 2.55–2.65 meters
✔ Range: up to 100 km per charge
✔ Top speed: 70 km/h; average operational speed 25–60 km/h
✔ Turning radius: only 12 meters (vs. 18 meters for conventional trams)
A new chapter in urban transport
Initially, the project will cover eight locations across Dubai, with potential expansion in later stages.
The trackless tram system will become a key part of Dubai’s smart transport ecosystem, offering residents a faster, greener, and more connected way to move around the city.
