Next-Level Ecotourism: Dubai Launches $177M Upgrade of Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary

Table of content

Dubai is taking another bold step toward a sustainable future. The municipality has launched a major redevelopment project of the Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary, with a total investment of AED 650 million ($177 million). This initiative aims to set a global benchmark for eco-tourism in an urban environment and aligns with the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan.

Phase I: Restoring Nature Across 6.4 km²

The first phase, valued at AED 100 million ($27.2 million), focuses on ecological restoration and biodiversity:

  • 60% increase in mangrove coverage — from 40 to 65 hectares

  • 44% increase in water bodies — expanding to 74 hectares, boosting CO₂ absorption by 60%

  • Creation of new habitats: Mangrove Lake, North Edge Lake, reed ponds, and 10 hectares of salt flats

  • Development of a Green Spine and continuous ecological monitoring

Already attracting around 20,000 migratory birds annually, including flamingos, the sanctuary is expected to grow its visitor count six-fold — reaching 250,000 to 300,000 per year.

Phase II: Infrastructure, Education & Engagement

The second phase will enhance 20,000 m² of visitor facilities:

  • Visitor center, birdwatching towers, restaurants, kiosks, and educational hubs

  • 5.6 km of cycling tracks and 3 km of walking trails

  • 23 hectares of new landscaping

  • Event spaces and environmental awareness programs

Designed by global experts in collaboration with the Dubai Environment and Climate Change Authority, the project has already won seven international and regional awards for sustainable and innovative design.

Why This Matters to Investors

  • Dubai continues to develop areas that enhance quality of life and boost tourism

  • Proximity to natural landmarks significantly increases property demand — both for living and rental income

  • Nearby areas like Dubai Creek Harbour and Al Jaddaf are already seeing rising interest and price growth
