Dubai has successfully created the world’s first electric abra using 3D printing technology.

Innovative approach to maritime transport

RTA has commenced the trial operation of this new mode of transport, which is already navigating Dubai Creek. Capable of carrying up to 20 passengers, the abra retains the traditional look of historical boats but features a modern interior.

Technological breakthrough in manufacturing and economics

The 11-meter long and just over three-meter wide hull of the abra is entirely 3D-printed and equipped with motors and two batteries. This approach has reduced production time by 90% and costs by 30%. The electric abra is part of Dubai’s environmental conservation strategy, contributing to the city’s ecological goals. Those interested can witness the trial operation of the new abra on the TR6 route, where it is temporarily available at the marine transport station on Sheikh Zayed Road.

Supporting the development of maritime transport in Dubai

RTA’s Director General and Chairman, Mattar Al Tayer, noted: “The trial operation of the 3D-printed electric abra is part of RTA’s master plan to enhance maritime transport services, which play a vital role in Dubai’s mobility, significantly improving the maritime transport sector.”

RTA is also working on upgrading traditional abra stations to enhance safety and protection for the 14 million passengers who use them annually.

Future plans

As part of the project, a large-scale renovation of four old stations is planned, including the Bur Dubai Marine Transport Station and Deira Old Souq Station. Completion of all works is expected by 2025.
